Beth Switzler and the Blue Streaks are 6-0 for the first time since the 1993-94 season.
Box Score After picking up consecutive Ohio Athletic Conference wins over Mount Union and No. 7/11 Ohio Northern, the Blue Streaks not only improved to 5-0 but found themselves ranked nationally for the first time in program history as the No. 24 team.
"We're happy to be winning on the road in this environment," said first-year head coach
Kelly Morrone. "It was loud. Their team was really motivated and the bench was in the game at all times. It was a tough game, certainly not the prettiest and most efficient."
Looking to improve to 6-0, the Blue and Gold traveled to Tiffin, Ohio to take on 6-1 Heidelberg University. Led by a double-double effort from senior
Missy Spahar, her third of the season, JCU proved worthy of the early season national ranking with a 91-79 victory over the 'Berg.
Both teams exchanged back-and-forth jabs throughout much of the first half, and the Blue Streaks held a narrow 22-21 lead with 8:34 remaining before intermission.
However, the Blue Streaks used a 17-4 run over the next four minutes to establish a 39-25 lead over the host 'Berg. JCU would maintain control throughout the end of the first half, posting a 51-40 lead at the break.
Senior
Missy Spahar led JCU with 13 points, four rebounds at two steals at halftime. Freshman
Katlyn Spahar and junior
Meghan Weber both had nine points, as well as five and four rebounds, respectively.
Despite trailing by double digits, the 'Berg came out of the locker room resilient. Heidelberg cut the deficit to just seven, 56-49, less than five minutes into the second half.
But the Blue Streaks bounced back, going on a 13-3 spurt to push the lead to 17, 69-52, with just 11:51 left to play.
Said Morrone, "It's when you have a point guard who understands you maintain and it's possession at a time. You can't stop a run in one possession and you can't start a run in one possession. Allie did a phenomenal job for 40 minutes defending their best player and having two people defend her all of the way up the floor. Also, it talks about their consistency and we want to make defensive runs. That's what we were trying to do."
Once again, the trend continued as the 'Berg answered with a 12-2 run of their own, trimming the deficit to just seven again, 71-64.
Fortunately for the Blue Streaks, they were able to land the last punch in a game of consistent runs from each side. The Blue and Gold used one last 11-2 run to make the lead 82-66, and put the game on ice from there, winning 91-79.
"I think towards the end, especially in the second half, we kind of took control," said
Allie Lustig. "At the end of the day we had a lot of people in double figures. Everybody showed up tonight, it wasn't just one of two people, it was everyone contributing."
With the win, the Blue Streaks improve to 6-0, including a 3-0 mark in the OAC. Heidelberg falls to 6-2 overall, including a 1-2 conference record.
Not only have the Blue Streaks won each game they've played this season, but they've won each by double digits. The road ahead doesn't get any easier for undefeated JCU, as they travel to play at No. 15 Ithaca on Saturday, Dec. 14.
