Ten players found the scoring column as the Blue Streaks improved to 8-0.
Box Score Having over a week off between games for the third time this season proved to be no challenge for the John Carroll University women's basketball team.
Playing in just its eighth game of the season the 24th-ranked Blue Streaks raced out to a 24-3 lead and never looked back in storming past Ohio Christian University on Monday afternoon inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.
With its 92-55 win John Carroll improved to 8-0 on the season while Ohio Christian fell to 5-8.
The Blue Streaks took control early on the inside with
Missy Spahar and
Beth Switzler having their way both offensively and in the rebounding department.
The Lake Catholic post duo scored JCU's first eight points before senior
Allie Lustig buried her first of two 3-pointers to electrify the Blue and Gold on an 11-0 run to start the game.
After Ohio Christian's first basket of the game junior
Emily Taylor took over leading JCU on a 13-0 run with eight of her career-high 15 points.
John Carroll's swarming defense caused fits all afternoon especially in the first half. Ohio Christian struggled from the field and was held to 6-of-29 shooting in the first half.
For the game the Trailblazers shot 29.8 percent for the game and became the first Blue Streak opponent to shoot under 30 percent since Muskingum was held to 23.8 percent from the floor on Jan. 26, 2013.
The 37-point win gives John Carroll two victories of over 30 points this season. Earlier in the year John Carroll coasted to a 33-point win over PSU-Behrend. The last time JCU earned to wins of over 30 points in a season was the 2010-11 campaign.
In both of its 30-plus point wins this season the Blue and Gold shot 50 percent or better from the floor finishing at 50 percent today and 51.6 percent against PSU-Behrend.
"Team offense is a great thing," said head coach
Kelly Morrone. "I think we did a great job moving the ball and finding the open player."
Spahar finished with a team-high 21 points and notched her fourth double-double of the season adding 11 rebounds. Switzler collected 10 rebounds total for the game with seven coming on the offensive end.
The Blue and Gold took full advantage of the domination on the glass which led to a 23-5 edge on second chance points.
"Rebounding is one of our main focuses," said Morrone. "They went with a smaller, quicker lineup and we knew that we were going to be challenged by that type of pace. If that's the case they better have one shot and done. Missy and Beth took care of the boards. I don't like giving up as many offensive rebounds as we did in the first half. We had to refocus. We have great leaders that understand that. That's a category we can't give up on."
Meghan Weber added a season-best 12 points while freshman
Katlyn Spahar contributed with 11 points.
Said Morrone, "We were certainly happy to get all of our kids in and get our legs underneath us after the break."
Defensively the Blue Streaks forced 25 turnovers led by
Daniella Rice's five steals.
The busy stretch of the JCU schedule begins on Saturday when JCU remains home to take on Muskingum at 3 p.m. The Blue Streaks are slated to play four games between from Jan. 4-11.
