The #16 ranked JCU women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the 2013-14 campaign Wednesday night in Berea
Box Score As the old adage goes, "all good things must come to an end." And that was exactly the case on Wednesday night for the Blue Streaks, as they suffered their first loss of the 2013-14 season with a 97-85 road loss to the rival Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets.
It took an exceptionally torrid shooting night by an opponent to halt what had been a historical start to the 2013-14 campaign for the John Carroll women's basketball team.
Both teams went back-and-forth in the first half with neither being able to separate themselves from the other. JCU even held a 49-48 lead with just 1:06 remaining in the first half, but the Yellow Jackets used a 7-1 run in the final minute to take a 55-50 lead into halftime.
Senior
Missy Spahar, who averages 25 points and 10 rebounds per game nearly matched those marks in the first half alone. Spahar dropped 22 points and reeled in eight rebounds in the first half, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Streaks trailed at half for the first time this season.
JCU came out of the intermission with a determined attitude, using a 9-2 run to take the 59-57 lead with 17:42 remaining in the game. With a narrow lead in hand and momentum on their side, the Blue Streaks seemed in position to improve upon its 11-game winning streak.
And then the bubble finally burst on the #16 ranked Blue Streaks.
A lay up from the BW's Lexi Rohrbach capped an 18-4 run over the ensuing six minutes that deflated the Blue Streaks' sails and gave the Yellow Jackets a 75-63 lead with 11:51 remaining.
The Yellow Jackets continued to maintain a steady lead throughout much of the second half, but a bucket from Spahar cut the deficit to just six, 81-75, with 4:25 remaining in the game.
However, that would be as close as the Blue and Gold would come the rest of the way.
It took a 12-for-19 night beyond the arc by the Yellow Jackets to hand John Carroll its first loss. Not only did the Yellow Jackets have success from beyond the arc, but they also took advantage on the glass as they outrebounded the Blue Streaks 49-32.Â
For JCU, Spahar finished with Shaq-esque numbers as she posted 36 points (matching a career high) and 12 rebounds. Junior
Beth Switzler added in 14 points and seven rebounds for the Blue Streaks.
With the loss, the Blue Streaks fall to 11-1 on the season, including 6-1 in conference play. Baldwin Wallace improves to 11-3 on the season and 6-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, forging a tie for first place atop the standings.
