Missy Spahar scored a career-high 37 points to help the Blue Streaks reach the century mark.
Box Score Before the 2013-14 season began, the John Carroll University women's basketball team had lost seven straight matchups – and 10 of their last 12 – against the University of Mount Union Purple Raiders. However, after defeating the Purple Raiders at home on earlier this season, the Blue Streaks traveled to Alliance, Ohio with hopes of picking up their first season sweep over Mount Union since 2008.
Mission accomplished.
The Blue Streaks took to the road and used a 58 point effort from the Spahar sisters (37 from Missy, 21 from Katlyn) to pick up the 101-78 win over the Purple Raiders.
Missy Spahar climbed to second all-time in program history in scoring and now has 1,646 points.
"The Spahar's are competitors," said head coach
Kelly Morrone. "They want to do anything they can get wins. Neither one of them focuses on their scoring, shot attempts or minutes; they just want to win. Their energy is contagious and their teammates feed off of them."
Just over halfway through the first half, the Blue and Gold (14-2, 9-2 OAC) used a pair of free throws from freshman
Katlyn Spahar to tie the game at 20 with 9:48 remaining before intermission. Both teams remained tied at 31 later in the first half, and later were also tied at 40, proving that neither side could gain any substantial ground over the other.
The Blue Streaks went into halftime trailing by just one, 44-43, but were led by a combined 25 points in the first half from the Spahar sisters – 14 from Katlyn and 11 from Missy. Sophomore
Emily Johanson also chipped in 11 points in the first half alone, just three short of her career-high of 14.
While the first half was essentially a stalemate between the two sides, the Blue Streaks opened the floodgates in the second half. JCU used a 30-17 run - capped off by a
Missy Spahar 3-pointer – to take a commanding 73-61 lead with 10:07 remaining.
From there, the Blue and Gold continued their offensive explosion, due in large part to a 26-point second half by
Missy Spahar, en route to outscoring Mount by 24 in the second half and winning by a final score of 101-78.
Senior
Allie Lustig chipped in 14 points while Johanson finished with 13 as the Blue Streaks topped 100 points for first time this season.
With the win, the Blue and Gold claimed sole possession of first place in the OAC as rival Baldwin Wallace, who was previously tied atop the conference standings, fell at home to Ohio Northern.
With just eight games remaining before the start of the OAC Tournament, the Blue Streaks are taking this season day-by-day. When asked how the team will prepare for the upcoming OAC Tournament, Morrone put it simply: "Have a good practice tomorrow."
