Box Score Only playing twice in the last 22 days, the No. 24 John Carroll University women's basketball team opened up a stretch of four games over the next eight days on Saturday afternoon against Muskingum University.

The high-scoring Blue and Gold put together another lights out shooting performance to cruise to an 81-52 victory inside the DeCarlo Varsity Center. The Blue Streaks improved to 9-0, 5-0 OAC while the Fighting Muskies fell to 4-7, 2-3 OAC.

Missy Spahar led JCU on a 6-0 run to start the game as the Fighting Muskies tossed every defensive look they could at the senior but could not slow her down.

John Carroll's fast pace of play proved to be no match for Muskingum as the Blue and Gold found numerous wide-open looks in transition en route to shooting a lights out 53.3 percent from the floor in the first half.

"We like offense that is no offense," said first-year head coach Kelly Morrone. "If we can take care of it defensively and create opportunities for ourselves that is what we've tried to do all year. Our kids have taking pride in their conditioning and they want to show that (in transition). They're going to show that as much as they can."

On the other end of the floor, the Blue Streaks kept the Fighting Muskies off balance and held Muskingum to 25.6 percent shooting in the first half.

Spahar finished with her fifth double-double of the season scoring 26 points and collecting 12 rebounds.

The Blue Streaks tied their season-high with seven 3-pointers on the afternoon in handing Muskingum its largest margin of defeat in the history of the series which began in 1981.

Leading the way was senior Allie Lustig who buried her first four trifectas to finish with 12 points. The senior dished out a game-high six assists on the afternoon.

Emily Taylor (2) and Katie Battaglia (1) rounded out the Blue Streak 3-pointers.

For the game John Carroll shot 47 percent while Muskingum was held to a 26.9 percent clip from the field.

Defensively Daniella Rice, Christie Wade and Meghan Weber all recorded multiple steals as JCU forced 17 turnovers.

"We're always going to challenge our defense to make somebody really run their offense in a comfortable state," said Morrone. "Muskingum was disciplined in their offense and they got us more than a couple of times in their sets. You can get lose in that motion but if you're taking care of pressuring the ball handler it makes everything else easier to handle."

John Carroll has scored over 70 points in each game this season.

The women's basketball team faces a busy week with back-to-back games at Medaille on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. before heading to Ithaca for a 4 p.m. tilt on Wednesday.
