Blue Streaks Bow Out To Top Ranked Thomas More In Second Round Of NCAA Tournament

Katlyn Spahar had 21 points in John Carroll's second round game in the NCAA Tournament
Box Score The tale will be told that the John Carroll women's basketball season came to an end when the Blue Streaks simply ran into a highly motivated and talented team tonight on its home floor hitting on all cylinders.

But the ending – a 120-86 loss to the #1 ranked Thomas More College Saints – should take nothing away from the revitalization story that took place in University Heights this winter.

The fact that the Blue Streaks could talk about a tough loss in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship is remarkable.

Nevertheless, the ending was still a tough one to swallow for a proud team.

Thomas More came out on fire, scoring 22 of the first 30 points of the game and led by as many as 22 points. When Sydney Moss dropped in a jumper at the 9:04 mark, the Saints led, 35-13.

The Blue Streaks showed some fight, however, and used a 27-14 run over the next nine minutes. Fueled by Katlyn Spahar's ten points during the run, John Carroll was able to pull to within 49-40 with 5.2 seconds left.

But in a sign of things to come, Moss – the nation's leading scorer –buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Thomas More a 52-40 lead at the intermission.

It was a downhill train from then on, as Thomas More opened the second half with a 25-12 burst and John Carroll never threatened again.

Thomas More was simply too much, scoring 68 points in the second half alone.

Sydney Moss, the much-hyped Division I transfer from Florida, was the catalyst for the Saints, delivering a game-high 37 points. Jenny Burgoyne added 21 as Thomas More finished the game shooting 39-65 (.600), 11-21 from three-point range (.524) and 31-35 (.886) from the free throw line.

JCU did force 17 turnovers and tallied 12 steals, but could never truly derail the rhythm of the Saints offense.

Thomas More improved to 30-0 with the victory.

John Carroll, which ended its historic season at 22-5, was led by 31 points from Missy Spahar, Katlyn Spahar added 21 and Emily Taylor tossed in 14 for JCU, which shot 30-64 (.469) from the field but had an uncharacteristic rough night at the line (23-37, .622).

For Lustig, she ends her career with 463 career assists, second only to Lee Jennings' record total of 496. Lustig also finishes her career as the 17th all-time leading scorer with 883 points.

Missy Spahar ends her stellar career tied for most games played (107), and atop the leaderboard in career points (1901) and rebounds (912).
