There were nine matches actually contested, and John Carroll won five of the nine.
But six free points given away by a forfeit at 125 and six points vehemently earned at 285 pounds proved to be the difference for visiting Ohio Northern as the Polar Bears escaped the DeCarlo Varsity center with a 22-18 victory in Ohio Athletic Conference dual meet action Tuesday night.
The Blue Streaks were in a 10-0 hole early on after the forfeit at 125 and a major decision loss at 133. But junior John Coccick turned the tide with a 3-1 win at 141 pounds. Connick and Dylan Dolph were deadlocked at one late in the third period until Connick scored the winning two points on a takedown with ten seconds left.
Dan Mirman continued his dominant season with a pin in the final minute at 149 pounds, and
Thomas McNulty followed with a strong come-from-behind win at 157 by a 6-4 count
In the biggest swing match of the night, Ohio Northern's Colt Lovejoy upset previously undefeated and #3 ranked
Terner Gott, 2-1, in a match that did feature a single take down. Lovejoy accrued over a minute of riding time in the third period that proved to be the difference. Lovejoy was champion of last weekend's Wheaton Invitational and improved to 28-4 on the year. Gott fell to 25-1.
Ohio Northern's momentum continued at 174 pounds with a victory by decision, and the Polar Bears held a 16-12 lead with three matches left.
Danny McNamara got the Blue Streaks a must-have win at 184 when he scored a takedown with three seconds left to force overtime, then took less than 15 seconds to win in sudden victory with a takedown for a 10-8 triumph.
Todd Gaydosh gave the Blue Streaks the lead heading into the final match as he won 10-3 at 197, but the happiness did last long as Ohio Northern's Cody Lovejoy slammed the door. Undefeated and ranked #1 in Division III, Lovejoy closed the match with a pin at 1:03 to deliver his team the four-point victory.
Ohio Northern improves to 14-4 overall and 2-1 in the OAC, while John Carroll falls to 5-8 and 0-3 in league action.
