There have been times this season that John Carroll has shown the ability to bounce back from tough losses.
That opportunity presented itself once again Sunday in a non-conference twinbill at DePauw in Greencastle, Indiana. After dropping the opening ganme by a 13-3 score, the Blue Streaks rebounded nicely with a 7-3 victory to earn the split.
DePauw simply ran away with game one, posting six runs in the second and seven more in the third to break out to a 13-2 lead. The Tigers pounded out seven hits and chased JCU starter
Rachel Byrnes after two innings.
Hannah Mizener had a strong effort in game one, scoring two runs and driving in two.
The Blue Streaks had a response in game two.
John Carroll put up a six spot in the top of the first, scoring all the runs it would need in a 7-3 victory.
Lauren Canciolo began the game with a single, then scored all the way from first when
Taylor Tercek reached on a throwing error on a bunt attempt.
It was then Mizener's turn to wreak havoc as she walked, stole second, and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher, which also brought tercek home for the second run.
Mizener scored on a double by
Alyssa Coleman, and then Coleman scored on a double by
Angie Zappitelli. The score was 4-0 before the first out was recorded.
Maggie Gannon got a rare start behind the dish, and she produced right away, delivering a one-out single. She then helped a run score when she stole a base, with the throw going off mark to allow Zappitelli to score. Gannon then came home on a passed ball for the sixth run.
By the time the dust had settled, JCU had sent ten batters to the plate and held a 6-0 lead after one half inning.
That was all
Ann Marie Kirchner would need, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits in securing her seventh win of the season.
John Carroll is now 16-10 on the season following today's split at DePauw.
