Box Score John Carroll's depth and experience came up big Sunday afternoon, as some close matches were turned the Blue Streaks' way by a number of veterans.
A 6-3 win over the College of Wooster in a non-league road match was a grind all the way through, as only two of the matches were "no doubters" at D.J. Hard Tennis Courts on the Wooster campus.
Box Score
In doubles action, both the top two matches were well contested. After
Dillon O'Brien and
Gustavo Garcia won by an 8-1 count at #3 doubles,
Jad Abdul-Aal and
David Sinense had to go the distance in defeating Jack Buchan and David Elkins, 9-8 (8-6) to gibe the Blue Streaks a 2-0 advantage. In the #2 slot, Titas Bera and Jesse DeWitt outlasted
Tyler Cole and
Nick Siciliano, 8-5, for the lone Wooster point in doubles play.
Alex Guthrie led off singles play with a 6-0 6-1 in the #6 match. Garcia followed with a 7-5 6-3 win over Buchan in the #2 match.
That left the Blue Streaks one point away from winning the match, but a tight loss at #1 (Bera defeated Abdul-Aal, 6-4 7-5) and another at #5 (Nathan Devereau edged Cole by an identical 6-4 7-5 score) put the outcome in doubt.
Further ramping up the drama was that the remaining two matches were extended to third sets. Sinense had won the first set against Elkins, 6-3, but fell in the second 4-6, to square the match at #3 singles. Meanwhile, Siciliano had rallied from a 4-6 setback in the opening set to even his #4 singles match with DeWitt thanks to a 6-3 triumph in set number two.
Both Sinense and Siciliano prevailed in the deciding frame, bioth winning by 6-4 scores to close out the afternoon.
John Carroll, ranked #17 in the latest ITA/Oracle Central Region rankings, improved to 10-6 overall thanks to an eighth consecutive victory. Wooster fell to 7-18.
