The John Carroll University women's track and field team is set for the annual OAC Championships on Friday and Saturday at Ohio Northern University in Ada, OH.
A memorable weekend could be in store for the Blue and Gold, where they go into the competition fresh off their best program finish (third place) at the indoor OAC Championships.
The women's team has continued to improve every year since Basista took over as the head coach. "It's definitely a process and it doesn't happen overnight. It takes a lot of time to get to where we want to be. We compare our process to piecing together a puzzle. Each workout is one piece and over time you put those pieces together to see the big picture."
Courtney Phoennik has made waves in her first collegiate season, rising to the top of the field at the All-Ohio meet with an 11.08-meter mark in the triple jump. She earned OAC Field Athlete of the Week in March.
The Blue Streaks' roster is chock full of speedsters, including the likes of Ashura Powell, Noelle Saluan and Kendall Miller. Powell posted a personal best in the 200-meter dash (25.70 seconds) earlier this month, while Saluan won her heat in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 59.70 seconds at the All-Ohio meet.
Antonia Piazza and Emma Harvey headline the hurdles, as they are coming off 16.17 and 1:05.90 clips in their respective events. Graduate student Becky Rohwer is the top long-distance runner, recently placing eighth out of 121 runners – many of whom were Division II athletes – in the 1,500-meter run (4:43.50) at the Bucknell Bison Classic.
The field events are led by Nicole Pilewski in the javelin and Cassidy Capizzi in the hammer throw. Capizzi is the first woman in program history to throw the hammer past 40 meters (40.11 meters), doing so on April 14.
All the action will start at 12 p.m. with the women's pole vault.
