After the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament in Crawfordsville, Indiana, six Blue Streaks continue to fight for their right to compete in the national championship.
Brackets - Day 1
Sophomore
Jarrod Brezovec is the sole Blue Streak left in the winner's bracket. Â Completing a quick fall in the first period over Alexander Smith of Defiance and comfortably winning a 10-4 decision over Wabash's Riley Lomenick, Brezovec has an opportunity to head to Indianapolis with just one more win. Brezovec will begin his day tomorrow facing off against Jordan Napier of Manchester, an opponent Jarrod lost to earlier this season.
Five wrestlers are working their ways through the consolation bracket, hoping to reach the coveted and final third place spot in their respective divisions.
After making quick work of Adrian's Mateo Diaz with a 38 second pin,
Andrew Perelka was pinned by Baldwin Wallace's Dante Ginnetti.  While suffering his first fall as a collegian, he bounced back and made history with a fall over Austin Wieczorek of Alma College. The match-ending maneuver was Perelka's 16th pin this season, making him the first JCU wrestler in history to reach that number of pins in a single season. The record of 15 was held by three JCU Hall of Fame wrestlers - Joe Bertolone (1974-75), Joe Schmidt (1989-90) and Mike Markovic (2001-02).
He will look to reach the third position at 125 to advance to Nationals.
Spencer Dusi also started well on the winner's bracket, but moved to the consolation side after a Fall from BW's Charles Nash. Â Facing off against Brandon Bartlome of Ohio Northern, Dusi came back from a 4-2 deficit with an escape and takedown in the third period to keep his campaign in the 133 pound division alive.
While dominating two of his opponents into 16-0 technical falls,
Jarrad Lasko dropped a vicious match with Wabash's Griffin Schermer, placing him in the consolation bracket. Â The senior will need to win three straight matches tomorrow in order to return to the national championship.
In the 157 pound weight class, Daniel Novak advanced through the first round on a forfeit, but would move to the consolation bracket in his next match. Â Novak bounced back with a fall in 3:51 over Chase Haehnle of Mount St. Joseph, keeping his run alive through the bracket to hopefully the third position.
While achieving two falls in under four and a half minutes,
Sam Gross suffered a 11-2 Major Decision by Trine's Owen Conklin. Â Gross just needs to win three more matches to send himself to the "big show".
John Carroll (54.5) is currently fifth out of the 18 teams in the Regional competition, only trailing Baldwin Wallace (94), Wabash (91.5), Mount Union (80), and Olivet (70).
The competition will resume tomorrow morning at Knowling Fieldhouse in Crawfordsville.
