The Blue Streaks defeated Mount St. Joseph before stumbling against Lourdes.
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On a cold, rainy Sunday, John Carroll University Wrestling welcomes Mount St. Joseph University, Lourdes University, and Lake Erie College.

At the 2021 JCU Duals inside the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, the Blue Streaks experienced a solid Sunday.

The Blue Streaks went 1-1 on the day, opening with a 31-9 win over Mount St. Joseph before wrestling extra matches vs. Lake Erie and finishing with a narrow 21-20 loss to Lourdes.

Match 1 vs. Mount St. Joseph
The Blue Streaks started fast against the Lions and never looked back, winning the first seven matches en route to a convincing win.

Eddie Wallace opened things up at 125 with a forfeit win. Andrew Perelka kept things rolling at 133. The Brecksville native tallied a first-period takedown and never looked back. He added a couple penalty points and an escape before sealing the deal with a takedown in the third period for a 7-2 decision.

Jarrod Brezovec left no doubt at 141, with a takedown and a pair of near falls for an 8-0 lead at the end of the opening period. A couple more near falls in the second period finalized a 19-2 tech fall at 4:44. Kale Buckiso secured four points at 149, also never trailing. The youngster tabbed a takedown, allowing an escape for a 2-1 lead after one. He didn't allow another point from there on out, with a pair of escapes and takedowns keying a 9-1 major decision.

Luke Reicosky battled against a solid foe at 157. The star got on the board in the second period with an escape, and further built the lead with a takedown and 2-point near fall. He allowed a third period escape, but still walked away with a 5-1 decision.

Adam Salek took the stage at 165 and kept the momentum rolling. The freshman notched a pair of takedowns in the first period. He allowed an escape in the opening frame, but never again surrendered another, rolling to a 10-1 major decision. Stefan Farian followed with a conquest at 174. The Revere grad snagged an escape and takedown in the second before finishing things up with a takedown in the third for a 5-1 decision.

JCU experienced the first loss of the day at 184 with a Brody Arrundale defeat. But Jesse Kanatzar got the train back on the track at 197 with a victory. He held just a 1-0 lead after the first, and his foe tied it at 1-1 in the third. But the Tallmadge native got in gear with a takedown and a nice nearfall for the 7-1 decision. Mount St. Joseph ended the dual with a pin win at 2:28 of the 285-pound match, setting the margin at 31-9 JCU.

Anthony Rizzo and Luke McKeon each won extra matches for JCU.

Match 2 vs. Lourdes
After Sean McElhinny and Caiden Rodgers got exhibition wins vs. Lake Erie, the Blue Streaks turned their attention to the final match of the day against Lourdes, a strong NAIA school.

The Blue Streaks, as per usual, got out to a strong start in the lowerweights. Eddie Wallace burst out of the gate at 125, building a 6-2 lead at the end of the first period with two takedowns and a nearfall. He wrapped things up with a reversal and nearfall in the second and then a takedown in the third for a 14-6 major decision. Andrew Perelka won his second match by tech fall like his first, though this one occurred in the third. The reigning Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week staked out a 17-2 tech fall win at 6:30.

Jarrod Brezoved experienced a rare defeat by fall at 1:22. But it did come against a strong opponent, Nickalas Henneman, currently ranked No. 3 in the NAIA.

Buckiso wrapped up a 2-0 mark for the weekend at 149. The Keystone State native sat ahead 2-1 after one, and then added an escape and a takedown in the second. He revved up in the third, with a pair of takedowns and a nearfall to get a 12-2 major decision, pushin JCU ahead, 13-6.

Ryan Forrest competed at 157, but could not get the win. The freshman lost via major decision, 12-4. Patrick McGraw got back some of the points at 165. He constructed an 8-1 lead in the first, highlighted by a 4-point near fall before running into trouble in the second, allowing three takedowns. He did counter with an escape each time, and added one more escape in the third, walking away with the 12-7 conquest.

Daniel Devera built on his nice win on Tuesday with a conquest at 174. The freshman held an early 5-3 lead after one, pushing the margin to 9-5 after two. He shined in the third with an escape followed by four takedowns, locking down a 19-8 major decision.

Trailing 20-10 entering 184, Lourdes mounted a comeback in the heavyweights. The Gray Wolves earned decision wins at 184 and 197 to narrow JCU's lead. Lourdes was charged a team point in the 197 pound bout, entering 285 with a 20-15 deficit. The Blue Streaks, however, could not prevent the comeback, losing the 285 match via fall at 5:00.

"We like to win, but losses don't sting as bad against tough teams like Lourdes who compete in a different division," explained Head Coach Mark Hawald. "We missed out on bonus points when they were possible and gave them up when we didn't have to. That was the difference between the win and loss. We wrestled well, but today shows we still can improve."

The Blue Streaks now stand at 2-1 on the year in duals. With a brief respite for Thanksgiving, John Carroll gets back to it on November 30 at Wilmington.
