Women's Basketball Quiets Quakers in OAC Tournament Quarterfinal

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Another career milestone for Nicole Heffington has helped propel the Blue Streaks to the OAC Tournament Semifinal.

After a 79-64 win over Wilmington, the Blue Streaks will host Ohio Northern on Thursday evening in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center. With the help of Heffington, who broke the career field goals made record with 23 points this evening, and 22 rebounds from Olivia Nagy, the Blue Streaks will be moving on.

"She is so deserving. To see the effort they put while sharing the ball is something I love to see as a coach," said Head Coach Beth Andrews '15.

Olivia Nagy picked up where she left off from Saturday, with two buckets to get the scoring started for the Blue Streaks. Nicole Heffington also hit an early three, as she entered the game 32 points shy of becoming the all time scoring leader in JCU history. The score was 9-9 as Wilmington had scoring contributions from four of their starting five heading into the media timeout. Wilmington took a quick lead, but an old-fashioned three-point play from Heffington and layup from Kaelyn Underwood got JCU the lead right back.

With a first quarter score of 19-15, Nicole Heffington led the Blue Streaks with six points, and Nagy had six rebounds. Six Fightin' Quakers scored in the period, led by Elise Carpenter with four points.

The teams traded baskets the first half of the second quarter, as the Wilmington offense found ways to keep it close and took advantage of a few mistakes by the Blue Streaks. At the media timeout, the score was 28-22 and Olivia Nagy had 11 boards.

Right out of the timeout, Wilmington got two quick baskets and forced three JCU turnovers to make it a one possession game once again, but could not capitalize and Heffington hit a corner three to push the lead to 31-26. A Nagy free throw was the only scoring the rest of the quarter to make the halftime score 32-26. Heffington led the Blue Streaks in points with 11, and Kennedy Lewis and Haley Cook each had eight points to lead Wilmington. Despite having 10 turnovers and allowing 20 points in the paint, the Blue Streaks managed a six-point lead going into the break.

Jaylen Hoffmann got the scoring started in the second half with the team's first eight points of the third quarter, as JCU extended their lead to 42-30 in the first five minutes. A chasedown block by Nagy and three-pointer by Heffington forced the second timeout of the half from Coach Blankespoor. The Blue Streaks continued to dominate the third quarter as they outscored the Fightin' Quakers 25-12, highlighted by eight points from Hoffman and Heffington. Six points in the final minute by Gabrielle Gevaudan, including a triple at the buzzer, set the score at 57-42.

The Blue Streaks held strong in the fourth quarter putting the game away, led by as many as 19, and the final was 79-64.

With 2:40 remaining, Nicole Heffington took her first break of the night as her day was done with 23 points and seven rebounds. Nagy shortly followed as her night finished with 10 points and 22 rebounds. After breaking the career field goals made record this evening, Nicole Heffington will head into Thursday night's matchup just nine points away from breaking the all-time scoring record in JCU history.

"I didn't even know it was a record, but it's an honor to be in the record books next to the JCU Women's Basketball greats," said Heffington.

Nagy also made history on Tuesday evening. The star center broke the single-season record for rebounds, surpassing Michaela Kempton's mark with 326 total boards. Nagy is also chasing down Missy Spahar's career rebounding record (912).

Kennedy Lewis led the Fightin' Quakers in scoring with 17, with Haley Cook short behind her with 14 points. Despite their 21 turnovers, the Blue Streaks were able to win by out rebounding the Fightin' Quakers 49-31, and shooting 44% from the field.

The Blue Streaks will host the Ohio Northern Polar Bears this Thursday February 24 at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center at 7 pm. The Blue Streaks won both matchups in the regular season, the first by five, the second by 25.

"We need to fix some things defensively and focus on our mentality. Everyone wants to beat us, so we need to be in the game mentally in order to fight on Thursday," said Coach Andrews.
