UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll University Women's Basketball team has added to its all-star staff.

Kelsey Michaels, a Clyde, Ohio native, is the new assistant coach of the Blue Streaks.

"I am blessed to have this opportunity at John Carroll," said Michaels. "I believe in John Carroll's mission of forming Women for Others, and I'm excited to have the opportunity to continue building on what's already an excellent culture."

The former forward had an impressive high school career, being a member of the 1,000-point club and having almost 1,000 rebounds. She also had multiple honors at the conference, district and state levels during her high school career before attending Ursuline College.

After dealing with injuries during her collegiate career, Michaels was hired in her senior year by her head coach at Ursuline to be a student assistant coach.

"My head coach at Ursuline opened me up to the business side of basketball," Michaels said. "She allowed me to focus on building a culture."

After graduation, Michaels was a part-time assistant coach for one year, while also being hired by the National Basketball Academy (TNBA), located in Eastlake, Ohio.

She was the Girls TNBA Director, tripling the size of the program and branching out in Northeast Ohio in the three years she was in that role. Making connections with coaches, players and families was a large part of what she did and will continue to be important in her new role.

"I like relating to the kids and keeping an open perspective," Michaels said. "I try to understand where they are coming from in their different cultures and really connect with them."

She has also been a professional trainer and has done skill development for the last four years.

"It's something that I find a lot of joy in," Michaels said. "I can't wait to find new ways to better athletes and better the way I'm training and communicating."

The Blue Streaks are very happy to have a high-caliber coach on board, as previous assistant coaches Michaela Barnes and Kiara Carter both helped to build the program before advancing to Division I jobs.

"Kelsey is the perfect fit for our program," said Head Coach Beth Andrews. "Kelsey's skill work and recruiting knowledge will be big for us. I'm thrilled to have her on board as we continue to build our program."

With practices starting up on October 15, Michaels is eager to start working with this year's team.

"I want to thank Al Miciak, Michelle Morgan, Katie Hine, and Beth for this amazing opportunity," said Michaels. "Getting to meet the team was fun and a great start to the season. People will underestimate us based on graduation, but I'm excited to see what we will do and improve upon what we did last year."
