Women's Soccer Keeps Unbeaten Streak, Beating Marietta to Complete the Sweep

MARIETTA, Ohio – The Saturday sweep concluded in Marietta.

Following wins by volleyball, football, and men's soccer, the Blue Streaks had a chance to finish the 4-for-4 special.

John Carroll Women's Soccer did just that, finishing off the Pioneers, 2-1, in a banner day for John Carroll Athletics.

The Blue Streaks did the trick with early goals in both the first and second halves, and thus advancing the winning streak to four matches and the unbeaten streak to 10 matches.

The scoring opened fast and furious in the opening nine minutes. Marietta got the first chance, testing Madeline Martin Kosier just 30 seconds into the contest. The freshman stood up to the task. Four minutes later, the Pioneers were not as fortunate.

Madyson Rosado tabbed a shot on goal that was saved in the fifth minute. But right afterwards, the junior did finish the chance, scoring her first goal against a conference foe this season. Rosado's opening goal marked the fourth straight game that JCU kicked off the scoring.

John Carroll did not rest on its laurels, as Meredith Coloian and Emily Patrzyk both tabbed shots on goal, but Marietta turned away both in the sixth and seventh minutes. But the Pioneers' counterattack proved to be effective.

In the ninth minute, the Pioneers found twine to even the scoring. Emma Egli did the damage, getting an assist from Demi Mills.

Some fouls and substitutions followed, as did some shots, but nothing on goal until Abby Walker forced Marietta's keeper to do some work in the 33rd minute. And just as the first half opened with the bang, it closed with a whimper.

The quiet did not last too long into the second half. John Carroll managed a series of corner kicks, four in the span of five minutes, but none led to anything. After a Walker chance was thwarted in the 53rd minute, Rosado broke through in the 56th minute.

The North Ridgeville took a pass from Abby Smith and slotted it home past the goalkeeper, for a critical 2-1 lead. The tally marked Rosado's fifth of the season and the 14th of her two-year career.

Rosado again threatened a minute later, but a hat trick was not to be. Marietta got a couple corners to follow, which went by the wayside. Gianna Merlo had a promising try in the 67th minute, only for Marietta to keep her off the board. For her part, Kosier stopped a Marietta shot on goal a few minutes later.

Sara Gennuso and Rosado each tabbed shots in response. But it was the Pioneers who fired things up down the stretch. The Pioneers peppered the Blue Streaks with shots, two in the 81st minute, one in the 86th minute, and another in the 87th minute. But the freshman stood tall, making a whopping five of her six saves in the second half.

John Carroll did outshoot Marietta in the conquest, 15-10, including 12-7 on goal. Corner kicks were nearly even.

Taylor Wohleber, Brooke Kelly, Julia Niehaus, Kathryn Shaffer, and Abby Walker all played the full 90 minutes for JCU.

At 7-1-3, this is the program's best opening to a season since 2008. During that campaign, the Blue Streaks fired out to a 8-1-2 start.

Michael Marich's side will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Baldwin Wallace at 7 pm. The match will mark the team's Morgan's Message Dedication Game at Don Shula Stadium.
