Campaign Concludes for JCU Volleyball in OAC Quarterfinal Loss at ONU

ADA, Ohio – Following a new weeklong break between the end of Ohio Athletic Conference play and the start of the OAC Tournament, John Carroll Volleyball journeyed to Ada.

Playing as the #5 seed, the Blue Streaks headed to face off with the Polar Bears, a stout challenge as the #4 seed in a strong conference. John Carroll had upended the previously #25 Polar Bears, 3-1, in Ada on October 14.

While John Carroll produced a strong fight, the campaign concluded in the quarterfinal round of the OAC Tournament, 3-1, with set scores of 21-25, 25-12, 20-25, 22-25.

At the start of the match, the home-court advantage felt real, as the Polar Bears burst out to a 9-3 lead. John Carroll slowly awoke from the bus lag, working back to a 14-14 tie thanks to leadership by Jennifer Follmer and Marissa Lynch. A 5-1 ONU run erased that momentum, and despite some attack errors by the hosts, the Polar Bears finished things off late.

The Blue Streaks played with a new purpose in the second set. Follmer guided the counterattack, as the Blue & Gold rolled up a 7-1 lead in a hurry. Natalie Glowe got in on the fun, with three kills to spur JCU ahead to an 18-6 margin. Follmer and Jessica Liddle showed no mercy late in the set, and so the Blue Streaks sent a message by taking the set handily.

As expected, the resulting third set truly told the story of the day. Ohio Northern roamed ahead 13-9 before JCU got three kills from three different authors, leading to an ONU timeout. A 5-0 ONU spurt to a 19-14 lead broke JCU's back, despite two timeouts from Head Coach Michele Benoit. The Blue Streaks could not rally and fell in the critical third set.

The fourth set saw the Blue Streaks play well for stretches. John Carroll opened strongly, bursting out to a 12-8 lead and another early Polar Bear timeout. A pair of Follmer kills pushed the advantage further to 15-9. But again, a ONU run dashed John Carroll's hopes. This time, it was a 10-1 jaunt. John Carroll was not dead, but the visitors were on the ropes. JCU got within one point several times, but this savvy ONU squad stood its ground.

And so, John Carroll's season concludes with a 17-11 record. This marks JCU's fourth time in six seasons with a winning record.

Follmer continues her case for further postseason recognition, as the senior enjoyed a great match. The Saint Joseph Academy grad tallied 18 kills and a .350 hitting percentage. Natalie Glowe also hit double figures, achieving a double-double with 13 kills and 15 digs. Jessica Liddle also deserves kudos with 7 kills (.450 hitting percentage), 4 blocks, and 5 digs.

Maddie Maziarz handled much of the setting with 26 assists (adding 14 digs), aided by Haley Nicholson's 18 assists. Lexi MacDonald topped the team with 20 digs.
