Kosier and Marich Headline All-OAC Recognition for Women's Soccer

Madeline Martin Kosier won OAC Goalkeeper of the Year & Freshman of the Year, while Michael Marich is the OAC Coach of the Year.
WESTERVILLE, Ohio — As a magical season continues, John Carroll Women's Soccer has earned plentiful recognition from the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Headlining the postseason recognitions are a pair of individual honors. Madeline Martin Kosier is both the OAC Goalkeeper of the Year and the Freshman of the Year.

And in a special honor, Michael Marich has been selected as the OAC's Coach of the Year after guiding the Blue Streaks to just the program's second OAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

Joining Kosier as OAC First Teamers are Kathryn Shaffer and Madyson Rosado. Garnering Second Team status are Emily Patrzyk and Alli Malinky. Rounding things out is Gabriella Walter on the Third Team.

"We are super excited for Maddy to get this recognition," said Marich. "I think it's well deserved, as her growth throughout the year was amazing. She made some huge saves throughout the OAC season. And as she would tell you, her teammates in front of her have been great. The hard work and team effort on defense all season was fantastic."

Madeline Martin Kosier started all 19 matches in net for the Blue Streaks, quickly becoming one of the conference's best keepers in her freshman campaign. The Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin grad rose to the occasion all season long, guiding the way for JCU's 18-match unbeaten streak.

Kosier stands favorably in just about every OAC statistical category. Most impressive is her .865 save percentage, which ranks tops in the conference. The Huntsburg native stands second in the league in goals against average (0.78) and saves (96). This honor stands alongside an All-Tournament honor plus a pair of OAC Athlete of the Week awards.

The Biology major is JCU's first Goalkeeper of the Year since Haley McDonald won the award in 2014. Kosier is also JCU's second OAC Freshman of the Year in program history, joining Emily Patrzyk from last year.

Kathryn Shaffer enjoyed an incredible year on the backline. The Cincinnati native started 18 matches as a special shutdown defender. The sophomore is third on the squad in minutes played (1,533). Shaffer also added a pair of assists, including a helper vs. Mount Union.

Madyson Rosado developed into a top-of-the-line scoring threat for the Blue Streak this season. The junior compiled 12 goals, tied for third overall, including a league-best 7 goals in conference play. The North Ridgeville native started all 19 games, compiling 1,186 minutes. Incredibly, Rosado is on a 5-game goal streak, with tallies in eight of her last nine matches. She netted the game-winning goal with just three minutes remaining in the OAC Championship to send JCU to the NCAA Tournament. This is her second All-OAC honor as she got Second Team last year.

Emily Patrzyk returns to the All-OAC squad for a second season. The sophomore was shaded more by opposing defenses, but she still found a way to impact the game. The Twinsburg native has registered 9 goals on the campaign, including five during conference play. Patrzyk is second only to Kosier with 1,572 minutes, starting all 19 matches this season. She also tops the team with 5 game-winning goals this year and has added 3 assists.

Alli Malinky makes her first career appearance on the All-OAC list. The sophomore started last year, and has continued to do so this year, starting all 19 matches. The midfielder turned it on in the postseason, with an assist in both the OAC Semifinal and Championship. For the year, the Canfield native has 4 helpers. Malinky has logged 1,378 minutes thus far this season.

Gabriella Walter is the final honoree on the Third Team. The senior was limited to 15 matches, but made in impact in each and every one. The Kent native makes her third appearance on the all-conference squad and a second straight Third Team honor. Walter accumulated 1,159 minutes on the season, including big minutes in the conference tournament. She added a goal in the tie at Wooster in late September. A key veteran leader, Walter has thwarted countless opposing offensive attacks.

As for Michael Marich, this is his first OAC Coach of the Year award. This is just the third such recognition for the Blue Streaks, as Tracy Blasius garnered the honor in 1999 and 2011. Marich surpassed the century mark for wins this season, and now stands at 106-89-34 (.537). This build is a long time coming for Marich, as he helped to lift a program making just its second NCAA appearance.

John Carroll will look to continue the magical season on Saturday. The Blue Streaks will head to nearby Case Western Reserve to confront the Cortland Red Dragons at 1:30 pm on Saturday.
