Women's Basketball Hangs on to Beat Wilmington on the Road

WILMINGTON, Ohio – Basketball is full of full-circle moments, and today was one for Beth Andrews '15 and the Blue Streaks.

Exactly 3,570 days ago, Andrews (then Beth Switzler) faced off against Sydney Moss (daughter of NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss) and Thomas More in the Second Round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. On that offensive frenzy of a day, Moss and the #1 Saints bested the Blue Streaks.

On Saturday, Andrews and Moss faced off again on the hardwood, except this time as head coaches, with Andrews guiding her Alma Mater and Moss steering the Wilmington Quakers.

In this barnburner of a game, Andrews' Blue Streaks emerged with the win in a 60-59 contest.

The victory marks John Carroll's second straight Ohio Athletic Conference win, particularly important since the Blue Streaks started off 0-2 against two tough foes. JCU goes into the holiday break with a 6-4 overall record.

John Carroll got off to a solid start, enjoying a 7-2 lead in the early goings. But the Quakers fought back for the lead, 11-9, with 2:20 left in the first. Halle Landies made a layup with 90 seconds left and Bella Carcioppolo hit a couple late free throws, but Wilmington went on a 4-0 run in the waning seconds to take a 16-13 lead into the second quarter.

John Carroll turned up the heat in the second stanza. After Wilmington got a couple early points, JCU tallied a 6-0 run, powered by Katie Zatta and Abigail Rosol jumpers, plus a pair of Landies free throws. The lead seesawed at the midway mark of the period before JCU again sprinted on a run, this time an 8-0 rally. Ava Ryncarz and Angela Vitantonio did the work with a pair of buckets.

The visitors managed to get some points on the board down the stretch, but a Vitantonio bucket set the score at 30-26 JCU entering the second half.

The Blue Streaks kept on building to start the third quarter. Kaylie McKenney and Carcioppolo layups helped to power the push to 38-28 and then 41-30 with 2:53 left. But from there, the lead quickly shrank. A couple buckets, several free throws, and a late three-pointer slimmed the JCU lead to just four, 45-41, entering the final quarter.

Wilmington quickly made it a one-possession game, and then even got to within one point. John Carroll then fired up the defense while finding more of a groove on the offensive end. Landies, Carcioppolo, Ryncarz, and Rosol all chipped in points as part of a 7-0 run to a 54-46 lead at 6:54.

Wilmington broke a three-minute drought without a bucket, slowly going to work on chipping away at JCU's advantage. The Quakers got to within one possession with 1:43 left, so Andrews called a timeout. A pair of Maddie Pietrowski layups pushed the margin back to two possessions, but Wilmington got a pair of points at the charity stripe with 28 seconds left to make it interesting.

After two more free throws by the Quakers with 19 ticks left, the Blue Streaks missed several free throws that might have iced it. But fortunately for the visitors, the Quakers missed a couple shots, including one at the buzzer.

Ava Ryncarz led JCU's scorers with 14 points, adding 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Halle Landies did plenty around the court, with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 assists.

John Carroll will now enjoy a two-week break off from competition. The Blue Streaks return to action after Christmas on Saturday, December 30 with a 1 pm non-conference game against Westminster.
