Women's Basketball Outlasts the Student Princes in Rare Monday Evening Matchup

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- In a rare Monday evening Ohio Athletic Conference matchup, John Carroll Women's Basketball hosted Heidelberg University at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.

The Blue Streaks entered the game on a 3-game skid, looking to gain some momentum and clinch a spot in the OAC Tournament. The last time these two faced off earlier in the season, the Blue Streaks won in dominant fashion, 84-49. Tonight was a reschedule from Wednesday, Feb. 1, as Heidelberg needed to postpone from that date due to COVID concerns.

The Blue Streaks protected their home court tonight in a defensive battle, winning the game, 55-50.

John Carroll got out to a quick start, as they won the tip, and Ava Ryncarz scored John Carroll's first five points. This would be the start of an early 9-2 John Carroll run. Sequoia Bradley would quickly respond with a mid range jump shot to end the run.

Heidelberg decided to run a 2-3 zone to slow John Carroll down a bit and it helped. The Student Princes proceeded to hold John Carroll scoreless for a couple of minutes. Alyssa Martin made an instant impact off of the bench for Heidelberg as she came in and scored a quick six points. Martin's baskets led to a John Carroll timeout with 3:30 left.

The quarter ended with John Carroll leading 19-16.

Ryncarz's hot first quarter start carried on into the second, as she knocked down a 3-pointer just one minute in the period. Heidelberg strung together some stops and baskets, which led to a John Carroll timeout with six minutes left, as John Carroll clung to a 24-23 lead.

Straight out of the timeout, Hallie Rogers gave Berg their first lead with two free throws. After a couple of back and forth minutes, Kaelyn Underwood got on the board for John Carroll, giving them a 31-29 lead with three minutes left. Heidelberg scored the final bucket of the half, so the teams stood tied at 31 entering the break.

Ava Ryncarz had a game high 11 points at the half, Underwood finished the half with eight. Alyssa Martin also had eight points to lead Heidelberg.

John Carroll started the second half scoring the first two baskets, prompting an early Heidelberg timeout. Martin responded to this break with a putback layup. A few minutes passed by before Sequoia would knock down a three pointer to cut the lead to 36-35, prompting a John Carroll timeout.

John Carroll would then put on a defensive clinic, holding Hiedelberg scoreless for the last four minutes. John Carroll finished the quarter ahead, 39-36.

Heidelberg opened the fourth in a 2-3 zone, as they got the first bucket of the quarter. A few minutes passed by before Ryncarz hit her second triple of the quarter. The basket fired John Carroll ahead, 46-38, bringing about a timeout from the Student Princes.

Heidelberg came out of the timeout with a quick 5-0 run, which was answered by a Underwood layup. A minute later, Jaylen Hoffmann made a huge 3-pointer, which was her first bucket of the game, to put John Carroll up 51-43.

Heidelberg continued to fight, as Hallie Rogers hit two free throws to cut the lead to 51-46 with 2:30 left. Ultimately Berg's efforts were too late, as Carmen Heuker sealed the game with two free throws.

Ava Ryncarz finished with 19 points, along with 14 rebounds and five 3-pointers, which were all game highs. Tonight marked the first double-double of Ryncarz's young career. Kaelyn Underwood contributed with 13 points and six rebounds. Alssya Martin led Heidelberg with a 13-point, 10-rebound double double off the bench.

"She's just really doing a great job of knocking down the outside shots to kind of loosen up that inside for us," Andrews said of Ryncarz's excellent effort.

With the win, John Carroll moves their record to 12-11, sending them over .500. The Blue Streaks will be in action Wednesday, as they will host another OAC matchup against Baldwin Wallace University.

John Carroll will celebrate Grade School Basketball Night and Academic Night, as well as recognizing Morgan's Message before the game.
