Women's Basketball Falls Cold in Home Loss to Marietta

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On this cold, snowy afternoon in University Heights, the Blue Streaks faced an Ohio Athletic Conference matchup against the Pioneers of Marietta College.

Coming off a win at Mount Union on Wednesday, the Blue Streaks fell to Marietta.

John Carroll Women's Basketball drops to 9-6 on the year, and 4-4 in OAC play.

The first quarter of Blue Streak basketball started off slow, only scoring 18 points. As the quarter went on, the defense by both teams was strong. Despite this, the Blue Streaks moved the ball well on offense and held Marietta to shoot only 16% from three-point range. Ava Ryncarz led John Carroll's scoring in the first quarter, shooting 57%. After a pretty clean quarter with only two fouls by both teams, there was a lot of back and forth basketball. Marietta stood ahead, 25-18.

The lowest scoring quarter, the second started off with many missed shots and rebounds. Despite Marietta being on top, the Blue Streaks were able to force six turnovers and out-rebound the Pioneers. On the Pioneers' last possession of the quarter, Bella Carcioppolo shut things down with a block to end the half at 36-26, with the score still in Marietta's favor.

At the beginning of the third quarter, the Streaks started hot, forcing a turnover leading to a quick layup by Maddie Pietrowski. The junior continued to advance the Blue Streaks' offensive drive by shooting 4-for-4 at the free throw line. On the defensive end, Abigail Rosol and Ava Ryncarz limited Marietta's second-chance opportunities with two defensive rebounds a piece. Despite the Blue Streaks' response after forcing turnovers, Marietta still led the hosts, 51-38, at the end of the third.

Early in the fourth quarter, Rosol pressured Marietta's defense after a rebound, forcing a Pioneers turnover, leading to a Ryncarz response with a layup. John Carroll's momentum continued after the score, playing stout defense as the quarter continued. The Blue Streaks attempted a comeback with little jolts of momentum throughout the quarter. With four minutes remaining, a Pietrowski three-pointer brought the game within five points. In spite of the Streaks' final push to gain the lead, the Pioneers ended on top with a final score of 65-54, closing out the game well.

Ryncarz and Pietrowski continued to have a steady offensive presence, scoring 18 points apiece. Ryncarz added 10 rebounds, including 8 defensive boards, for her fourth double-double of the season.

The Blue Streaks will take on another conference opponent, Otterbein University, this Wednesday on the road.
