Men's Wrestling Upended by Albion in Home Debut

Brett Stanley notched a dramatic win in his collegiate debut.
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The opening night for the John Carroll Men's Wrestling program, although a packed house at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center filled with excitement for the upcoming season, was underwhelming.

Despite a first match victory, Albion seemed to outmatch John Carroll for the rest of the night, defeating them by a score of 38-3.

The Blue Streaks did see some promising performances, regardless of the unfortunate start to the season.

Results

In the first match, and only win of the night for either JCU Wrestling squad, Brett Stanley was taken down early by Jeremy Sarter, but battled back for a hard fought 8-5 win.  He had a 3-point takedown with around 8 seconds remaining to secure a dramatic victory to begin the night.

A couple matches later, Kyle Bizjak was in a difficult fight against Max Honiss. Finishing in a very close 2-0 loss, both fighters scrapped for every bit they could get, but Bizjak came up just short.

Aiden Ashburn led for most of the first period before conceding the lead with under 30 seconds left. He was unable to recover throughout the rest of the fight, and he regrettably lost 6-2.

Jesse Kanatzar was locked into a tight battle through two periods, only down 1-0. He opened the third period by tying up the match on an escape, and Kanatzar was able to bring it to OT. It was more of the same for the Blue Streaks, sadly, and in one of the more exciting finishes of the night the senior was taken down for 3 points by a buzzer beater.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action November 10 in Cleveland, where they will compete in the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Intercollegiate Open.
