JCU built an early 12-0 lead but ONU clawed back for a 21-20 win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a cold Tuesday December evening in the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center, John Carroll Men's Wrestling experienced a heartbreaking defeat.

A pin in the heavyweight match delivered a comeback 21-20 victory for Ohio Northern, as the Blue Streaks dropped to 1-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference duals.

A riveting 12-0 streak for the Blue Streaks started the night off the right way.  John Carroll was in the driver's seat for much of the match, staying just ahead of the Polar Bears the whole way until the very final bout of the night. Ohio Northern's Myles Johnson secured the huge pin in the last match of the night to secure the 21-20 conquest for the visitors.

It was a night full of great matchups, and fortunately a lot fell in favor of the Blue Streaks in this friendly match between two OAC teams.

In a match where he was out ranked regionally (#4 vs. #5) and after struggling in the first period down early, Brett Stanley completely turned things around in the second taking an 8-5 lead.  From there on he was able to hold on for the win by decision 9-5 for the early John Carroll victory.

Although there was not much action through most of the first two periods, Ty Daugherty was able to secure a takedown in the waning seconds of the second to take a 4-0 lead. Despite conceding an early two points in the third, he was able to lock in the victory in the end, 7-2.

A very tough fought first period for Diego Stropko saw him down 3-1, but he hunkered down and came back with three seconds remaining in the second period. He completed an absolutely thrilling pin to secure the third victory in a row for John Carroll to start the night.

In his first match of the year, Daniel Devera had a battle ahead of him taking on the #5 wrestler in the region, Teagan Hendricks. Taken down early, Devera had to fight back in the first for a 4-3 lead.  He expanded that lead in the second, going up 8-3 headed into the third. And for his first victory of the season, he came away with the 11-3 win.

A huge early take down for Wills Bronson excited the crowd and his team's bench, and he left the first period with a 6-1 lead. He extended his lead in the second period 12-1, and although conceding an early takedown in the third, he came away with a decisive 14-4 major decision.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action Saturday, December 7 when they will take part in the RIT Invitational in Rochester, NY.
