Domitrovich And Correia’s School Record Efforts & National Marks At Wake Forest Highlight Meet Weekend

COLUMBUS & BEREA, Ohio | WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina - It was a successful weekend for the Blue Streaks coming off another meet weekend on the 2024 outdoor campaign. 

On Friday, a small contingent traveled to the Jesse Owens Classic at Ohio State, while the senior duo of Ethan Domitrovich and Caleb Correia traveled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina for the Wake Forest Invitational. 

Most of the team competed at the Sparky Adams Invitational on Saturday hosted by Baldwin Wallace, both Friday and Saturday.

To get the weekend started, Correia competed in the 800 meter run at the Wake Forest Invitational and broke the outdoor school record with a time of 1:50.46 with a 19th place finish overall. That time puts Correia currently at ninth in Division III. Later on in the day, Domitrovich made an appearance in the fast heat of the 3000 meter steeplechase and posted one of the greatest performances in a JCU uniform. He placed seventh overall with a time of 8:49.12, breaking the school record and putting himself at third in Division III. A tremendous weekend for the both of them as they gear up for postseason racing in a few weeks. 

At the Jesse Owens Classic hosted by Ohio State, senior Mick Doyle finished fifth overall in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.12 seconds. This was his third appearance in the event this outdoor season. 

On Saturday, most of the men traveled to Berea, Ohio for the Sparky Adams Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace. 

To get things started in the field events, junior Matt Russo would win the discus throw with a mark of 45.36 meters. Tony Tirado would make his second appearance in the javelin throw and place seventh overall with a mark of 39.39 meters, earning a new personal best. In the men's high jump, the Blue Streaks had a few athletes make their track & field debuts. Luke Frazier (1.96 meters), Brandon Rose (1.81 meters), Jeremy Frazao (1.81 meters), and George Wilson (1.76 meters) all earned top eight finishes in the event and secured marks for the conference championships in a couple of weeks. Jimmy Kartsonas would place fourth overall in the men's long jump, earning a mark of 6.42 meters. 

Moving on to the running events, in the men's 1500 meter run, junior Jack Root would lead for the Blue Streaks and place third overall with a time of 4:03.86. Junior Jett Wieber would return to the track for the first time in three years since high school and run 4:08.58 placing fifth. Seniors Matt Costanzo (4:09.55) and John Shoemaker (4:10.72) would round up the top eight for JCU. 

In the men's 800 meter run, junior Mike Hvizdos would win the race with a time of 1:56.22. Hvizdos would continue to excel in the event throughout this outdoor season. 

Victor Ononogbo would lead JCU in the men's 400 meter hurdles, clocking in at 57.13 seconds to earn second overall. Tony Tirado (57.90 seconds) and Evan Piscitani (1:01.36) would both earn personal bests and place third and ninth overall. 

In the men's 200 meter dash, Tim Herczog would continue his progression, running 22.95 seconds placing 11th, followed by freshman Jack Arnold, earning a personal best time of 23.25 seconds placing 15th overall. 

Lastly, in the men's 5000 meter run, three Blue Streak runners would earn personal bests including Ian Paul (15:11.84), Phil Coury (15:33.46), and Jack Curtis (15:52.15) earning first, fourth, and fifth place overall finishes. 

The Blue Streaks will be back in action next week on Thursday, April 25th at the Walsh Invitational. The men's 4x400 meter relay will be traveling to the 2024 Penn Relays next weekend as well.
