Women's Soccer Stopped Short on Senior Day

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, John Carroll Women's Soccer celebrated Senior Day before today's match.

The Blue Streaks thanked Lizzie Bruce, Madyson Rosado, Gianna Merlo, Jennifer Crowley, Brooke Kelly, Elese Tichy, and Adrianna Tartaglia for their contributions to the program before the match began.

Unfortunately, the Blue & Gold could not commemorate the event with a victory, falling to Mount St. Joseph, 2-1.

With the defeat, JCU drops to 3-4 early in the campaign.

The good vibes from the Senior Day festivities did not last too long, as the visitors pressured the Blue Streaks from the start. In the very first minute, the Lions earned a couple chances that had the home fans holding their breath.

But thanks to deft defense by Madeline Martin and her charges, the Blue Streaks fended off the opportunities. The sophomore netminder would need to be brave soon after.

A foul in the box granted Mount St. Joseph a penalty kick in the 16th minute. Diving to her left, Martin made a critical save, an impressive feat on what was a nice shot.

The Lions continued to experience some close calls, as the Blue Streaks appeared to be in danger of falling behind. Instead, it would be the hosts to find twine first. A handball in the box gave John Carroll a penalty kick in the 27th minute. Madyson Rosado promptly buried it, ice in her veins, setting the Blue Streaks ahead.

The lead would not last for long. In the 30th minute, the Lions centered in a pass from the right side. John Carroll tried to clear it, but the ball bounced off of Kendal Fox and into the back of the net to knot the contest at one.

The Lions held a 10-3 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes of play, as Martin made four nice saves.

The Blue Streaks continued to ward off determined MSJ attacks. For example, in the 57th minute, Martin made a wonderful save to keep things even. The Lions pushed and pushed and pushed. In the 67th minute, the Lions came up with the eventual game-winner.

A corner kick started the play, with a nice pass sending the ball into the box. The ball bounded around amongst players, as JCU tried to corral it but could not. Kendal Fox again found herself in the right place at the right time, and potted her second of the game.

While John Carroll did have some chances, the Lions did not stop attacking. An offsides call in the 73rd minute waved off what at first appeared to be an insurance marker.

Other than a Rosado wide attempt in the 84th minute, the Lions dominated most of the opportunities down the stretch, keeping JCU from building up any promising chances.
