Men's Wrestling Registers 4 Placers at Jamestown Open

Ryan Forrest was one of JCU's second-place finishers

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – A busy weekend concluded on Sunday for John Carroll Men's Wrestling.

The Blue Streaks notched four placers at the Jamestown Jayhawk Open at Jamestown Community College.

Alex Crane, Ryan Forrest, and Bear Horgan notched runner-up efforts. Niko Kalamaras tallied a fourth-place effort.

The emergence of Alex Crane at 125 pounds in the past few weeks has been one of the top stories of the new year. The Thornville, Ohio native continued his strong run by opening with a pair of decisions (8-3 and 10-3) over foes from Alfred State and Pitt-Bradford. A medical forfeit launched him into the final, which he dropped via a 10-2 major decision. But still, a runner-up placing was welcome.

Ryan Forrest cruised through much of his 157-pound bracket. The Hamburg, New York native opened with a win by pin, following it up with a 20-3 tech fall. A first-minute pin propelled him into the semifinals. The senior fired into the title bout with a 15-5 major decision. The championship match was a down-to-the-wire affair. But in the end, Gannon's Chance Kimmy emerged with an 8-7 decision.

Bear Horgan began his day in the quarterfinals at 184, roaring to a pin in just under 90 seconds. He continued to roll in the semifinal, picking up a 17-6 major decision. The success ended there, as the Mentor grad experienced a 19-4 tech fall in the first-place match.

Niko Kalamaras was one of JCU's two first-year placers, as the rookie performed aptly at 174. The Avon native got going with a 10-3 decision, and then earned a hard-fought 12-9 decision in the first period of sudden victory. Kalamaras then got bounced to the consolations with an 18-2 defeat in the semifinal, but he rebounded quickly with a pin win over a grappler from the host Jayhawks. In the third-place match, Kalamaras ran out of steam and lost via pin.
