Volleyball Conquers Purple Raiders in Alliance in Style

The Blue Streaks played excellently on the road against a rival

ALLIANCE – A once fierce conference rivalry became a non-conference showdown on Wednesday.

Be it conference or non-conference, a win over the University of Mount Union is always sweet. Particularly when JCU had not beaten Mount Union on the road since 2015.

John Carroll Volleyball dispatched of the Purple Raiders at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex by set scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-19.

In the opening set, the Blue Streaks and Purple Raiders had an identical number of kills (16) but ultimately a few more errors by JCU led to a narrow defeat. The hosts opened a pair of big leads early on, but JCU chipped away to a 21-20 deficit. However, Mount Union managed to seal the deal late.

The teams traded runs in the second set. A 7-0 JCU boost opened a 13-10 lead that the visitors never relinquished. GG Beuselinck caught fire at the service line with a pair of aces, keying a strong stretch effort by JCU en route to a 25-22 conquest.

John Carroll's attack was potent in the third set, while the Purple Raiders scuffled with 8 errors. An 8-0 jaunt to stretch the JCU lead to 18-7 buried the purple squad. A pair of late Natalie Glowe aces slammed the door.

JCU started the fourth set strong but a 6-1 Mount Union run threatened to undo the Blue & Gold. Thankfully the gritty Streaks replied with a 4-point rally, and then another, and then another. Attack errors hurt the hosts, as did Kendra Dziubinski's dominant play in the middle.

Dziubinski looked outstanding on the statsheet, with 11 kills against 0 errors in 15 attempts for a mind-boggling .733 attack percentage. Mary Kate Sheehan tied the veteran with 11 kills in a strong effort. Hailey Williams played well with 10 kills. JCU finished with a .252 attack percentage.

Tess Humphrey led the way with 21 assists, plus 8 digs and 2 aces. Natalie Glowe topped the team with 16 digs, followed by Olivia Mogyordy with 11.
