Three first-year grapplers earned top-three finishes in Indiana

MANCHESTER, Ind. – To cap off a busy week, John Carroll Men's Wrestling headed to Manchester University for the 2026 Tom Jarman Spartan Mat Classic.

The trip was worth it for the Blue Streaks, as several young wrestlers showcased strong results in a sixth-place team finish.

Individually, a total of seven placers repped the Blue Streaks.

Adom Sharpley (141) and Christian Friel (165) guided the way with second-place finishes. Juuso Young (197) looked strong with a third-place standing. Frank Gallo (197) and Thomas Lunt (285) both snagged fourth. Ty Daugherty (133) and Wills Bronson (184) both nabbed fifth-place efforts.

Sharpley roared out of the gates with an 18-1 win over a foe from Ohio Wesleyan. Following a 3-0 win over a Wabash foe, the first year roared into the round of four with a 13-3 major decision. A 4-2 decision propelled him into the finals, as a key third-period takedown with 1:16 left did the trick. The Solon native could not get any offense going in the final in a 4-0 loss, but still, it was a nice result for him overall.

Friel experienced a similar start, with a 16-5 major decision followed by a narrow 6-2 win over an Ohio Northern foe. An 18-7 victory sent him into the semifinals, where the North Canton native outlasted a Thomas More foe thanks to a second-period takedown followed by a nearfall. The first year ran out of steam in the final in a 4-0 loss to Baldwin Wallace's Andrew Supers.

Young and Gallo found themselves on a collision course at 197. Young notched a pair of decision wins (8-2 and 9-4) before losing by fall in the following round. Meanwhile, Gallo won in convincing fashion in his first match in a 24-9 tech fall. His strong offensive stretch continued with 17-12 and 12-6 decision wins. The sophomore lost to BW's Joseph Petrella, finding Young in his final match. In the third-place bout, Young emerged with the win by notching a takedown just 37 seconds into the match and then pinning Gallo 27 seconds later.

Lunt's day was highlighted by a thrilling opening bout against BW's Angelo Carmago, as a Lunt survived the second tiebreaker period to move on. Lunt notched two more decision wins, 7-2 and 4-2, before losing in sudden victory to drop to the third-place bout, which he lost.

Daugherty kicked off the day with a difficult defeat before firing up a nice series of wins. Daugherty won by fall, then 14-5 major decision, then 10-8 decision, then by pin. In the fifth-place bout, the senior notched takedowns late in the first and early in the second to win, 7-2.

Bronson began the day with a pin before dropping a 13-4 major decision. Bronson rebounded with a pin win, then a 10-3 decision. The Memphis native racked up an 11-0 lead before finishing off his foe by pin at 2:06 in the fifth-place match.
