Men's Track & Field Looking Forward To The Opportunity To Compete At Home This Year
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – After having one full year under his belt as the Director of Cross Country/Track & Field at John Carroll University, Daniel Tutskey and his staff are ready for what's to come.

This upcoming season brings a lot of excitement as the new Athletic Wellness & Event Center (AWE) opened its doors in the fall to the campus and the community.

This past Saturday, January 17th, the program hosted their first annual JCU Track & Field Alumni Meet with about 90+ alums coming back to campus and competing in the new facility.

There will also be two high school meets taking place on January 18th and the 25th, both on Sundays.

To officially begin their season, they will open up at home for the Hayden Snow/Leo Miller Meet of Champions on Saturday, January 24th. Field events are set to take place at 11:45 AM, while the track events will follow at 1:45 PM.

As former athletes of the program, both Hayden and Leo will be recognized for their outstanding careers as Blue Streaks during a couple of breaks throughout the meet.

The Blue Streaks will return to Boston for a couple of meets to earn national marks including the BU Valentine Invite and the Tufts Cupid Challenge. Both meets will be crucial and important as they will be a determination of where they stand amongst the best in Division III.

With the first two meets being held at home this will also be the first season the team will compete in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).

The 2026 NCAC Indoor Championships will take place in Springfield, Ohio hosted by Wittenberg University, while the outdoor championship meet will be held at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.

There are several returners that will have an impact on the team this year. One of them includes senior Basheer Alramahi.

He is coming off a junior year that was not only successful, but also historic. He was named the NCAA Elite 90 award winner for the 2025 indoor season, as well as became a three-time All-American in the 400 meter dash and 4x400 meter relays. Alramahi was also named the 2024-2025 CSC Academic All-America Team Member of the Year.

Other sprinters to look out for include Tyler Gast, Dustin Horner, and Tony Tirado. All three were a part of the All-American 4x400 meter relay, finishing seventh overall with a time of 3:11.91.

Looking at the field events, the jumps crew will be a fun group to watch this year.

Jeremy Frazao will look to continue his trajectory of being a top athlete in the NCAC, as well as sophomore Julius Kimbrough as he is coming off of an All-Conference season as a high jumper.

Going into the distance events, this is a group that will look to take that next step. The men's distance medley relay will look to get back to the national stage, as well as compete for conference accolades.

The men's cross country team is coming off of an NCAC Championship performance, as well as a top three finish at the Great Lakes Regional Championships.

Sam Su was the lone national qualifier for the Blue Streaks and will look to replicate that success on the oval.

Senior Ian Paul has been a huge contributor for the men. He earned two All-Conference accolades and was named NCAC Athlete of the Week during cross country.

Coming off of an individual championship performance, Nate Julien will bring a lot of experience to the team this year as well. He earned personal bests ranging from the mile to the 10000 meter run outdoors.

Sophomore Charlie Payne brings a lot of promise to the track as he is coming off of an All-Conference performance in the steeplechase.

First year athletes to keep an eye on include Lars Broberg from Gilmour Academy, Isaiah Travlee from Shaker Heights, and Cole Mayer from Amherst. All have made tremendous strides in their training and bring lots of potential from their high school years.

Depth and experience will be valuable for this group moving forward on both the conference and national levels as this new era of track & field at John Carroll begins.

Back in December, the men opened up their season at the YSU Icebreaker, earning several personal bests and high finishes across all divisions.

This year will bring a lot of excitement and will be remembered forever as the program opens up their season in the Athletic Wellness & Event Center, but overall, the athletes and coaching staff are looking forward to taking another major step this year.

"Momentum has been building for well over a year," says Tutskey. "The new Athletic Wellness & Event Center has invigorated our athletes. Last weekend we hosted our first Annual Alumni Meet, where we were finally able to bridge our past and present."

Tutskey also talks about how much it meant for the alums to be back on campus to help energize the men's team going into this year.

"The event provided the opportunity for our athletes to compete alongside and meet alumni who hold school records and have had legendary moments in our program's history. Alumni like Alex Phillip, George Sample, Hayden Snow, and Leo Miller. With heading into a highly competitive meet this coming weekend, I'm excited for our athletes to compete against a really strong field. Our men are deep, experienced, and highly motivated heading into the season."

It should be a fun and exciting year for this group as they will look to continue upholding a standard of excellence from these last few years.
