Adom Sharpley (pictured) and Kyle Bizjak both won their first career tournaments

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – A Saturday trip to New York turned out to be a boon for John Carroll Men's Wrestling.

The Blue Streaks competed among 35 teams at the 2026 Jamestown Jayhawk Open with a snowstorm looming from the West. JCU posted excellent results with a total of 11 placers.

Kyle Bizjak, Wills Bronson, and Adom Sharpley formed the triumvirate of John Carroll's champions at their respective weight classes. Each certainly felt great about the first-place efforts.

Ty Daugherty and Brett Stanley clipped bronze finishes after reaching the semifinals.

Will Allen, Christian Friel, Jacob Holtz, and Juuso Young all tallied fifth-place finishes. Bear Horgan and Aiden Ashburn rounded things out in sixth place.

Kyle Bizjak returned to the mats for the first time since early November, and what's more, the junior showcased no signs of rust. In the 149-pound bracket Bizjak opened with a win that required a tiebreaker period, which he dominated with a takedown and then a reversal in a 7-1 victory. Things got a bit easier from there with a 21-4 tech fall before a pair of clear decisions, 4-1 and 14-7. In the first-place bout, Bizjak won a 17-5 major decision over Thiel's Jonathan Bissell, wrapping up the Aurora native's first-ever tournament win.

Wills Bronson cruised into the semifinal with ease at 184, with a forfeit and a 22-second pin. The semifinal proved more difficult for the Tennessean, but a third-period takedown ensured a 5-2 decision. The final match proved to be a breeze, as the junior picked up a pin in 2:34.

Adom Sharpley joined Bizjak in winning his first career tournament. In similar fashion, the first year needed to buckle down for a narrow opening win, his of the 9-7 variety. The Solon native then opened things up more with an 11-4 win in the quarterfinal. At the 141 semifinal, Sharpley utilized an early third-period takedown to eke out a 3-2 win over teammate Will Allen. In the title bout, Sharpley built an early lead on a takedown and never looked back in an 11-5 triumph, thanks in part to addition early takedowns in the second and third periods.

Ty Daugherty posted his best effort of the season to date by finishing third at 133. The senior lost in the quarterfinals after opening the day with an 18-2 tech fall. The Avon native battled back all the way to the third-place match thanks to a pair of tech falls and a pin. Daugherty kept his mojo going with a takedown with 29 seconds on the clock winning him the bout in a 5-4 decision.

Brett Stanley wrestled for the first time since early December. The star 125-pounder kickstarted the day with a pin before the buzzer of the first period. A 6-0 decision propelled him into the semifinals, where he experienced a 10-3 defeat. But the Broadview Heights native bounced back with a first-period fall, and then won the third-place match handily in an 11-0 major decision.

Will Allen reached the 141 pound semifinal thanks to two tech falls, but Sharpley edged him out. Allen lost his opening consolation match, 10-4, but concluded the day on a positive note with a pin in 5:23.

In a similar way, Juuso Young fired into the semifinals at 197. The first year won via a first-period pin, 15-0 tech fall, and an 8-0 major decision in a strong defensive showing. A loss via fall in the semifinal and then another in the consolation semifinal sent him to the fifth-place bout. Bear Horgan found his way there the hard way, as a second-round loss sent him to the consolation bracket. The resilient Mentor grad picked up a 10-3 decision before rolling with a couple pins. But a defeat in the consolation semis set up an all-JCU match. Young grabbed fifth and Horgan settled for sixth.

Christian Friel cruised into the 165-pound semifinals. The North Canton native strolled into the semis on a pair of first-period pins. But a pair of losses sent him to the fifth-place match. The young grappler ended the event with a roar, firing up a pin in just under two minutes.

Jacob Holtz battled his way in the 285 bracket, with an 11-1 major decision and a win in sudden victory getting him to the semifinal. A pair of pin losses sent him to the fifth-place match, which he won by medical forfeit.

Aiden Ashburn returned to the mats for the first time since the RIT Invitational and acquitted himself well. The senior started things off with a 3-2 decision and a 6-0 decision. Ashburn suffered a minor injury in the semifinal, which forced him to eventually accept sixth. Still, it was fantastic to see the veteran back in action.

The Blue Streaks will travel to Illinois next weekend for Wheaton's Pete Willson Invitational.
