Volleyball Conquers Case Western Reserve in Five-Set Victory

A late offensive spurt keyed the Blue Streaks' close win

CLEVELAND – Wins have been at a premium down the stretch as of late for John Carroll Volleyball, and the Blue Streaks have worked hard for the victories they've achieved.

On Wednesday at Cleveland rival Case Western Reserve, the Blue Streaks needed the full five sets, but they secured the conquest over the Spartans at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

John Carroll outlasted CWRU on the road, 25-18, 18-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10, to advance to 12-7 on the season.

The teams played closely in the first set until JCU fired up a 7-3 run to take control, 19-14. Despite a CWRU timeout, the Blue Streaks didn't lose steam, as Natalie Glowe punctuated the set with a pair of kills.

The second set was a reversal of the first, with an even start but then it was the Spartans firing up a big run. Thanks to the 9-2 stint, CWRU walked away with a set win to even things up.

Mary Kate Sheehan caught fire in the third set, helping the Blue Streaks get going. After a 7-2 CWRU run slimmed the JCU lead to one, 21-20, Sheehan helped the Blue Streaks pull away late.

The teams played evenly in the fourth set in the early going, but the Spartans roared for a 6-point run to take command, 19-12. The visitors couldn't string together a run to make it interesting late.

In the fifth set, the Spartans got out to a strong start, 10-6. But then  the Blue Streaks found another gear. CWRU errors got the train in motion before Glowe and Sheehan sped up the Spartans' demise. John Carroll played a near flawless fifth set offensively to secure the conquest.

Sheehan nabbed a season-best 18 kills, followed by Glowe with 17. Tess Murray tabbed 26 assists. Olivia Mogyordy tallied a career-high 38 digs.
