Dems won NCAC Pitcher of the Week honors thanks to back-to-back shutout wins

CLEVELAND -- For the first time since 2018, John Carroll Softball can claim a conference pitcher of the week award.

And what's more, JCU Softball has not swept the weekly awards since 2016.

Kristin Dems was crowned as the North Coast Athletic Conference's Softball Pitcher of the Week honors after an impressive start to the season.

The junior enjoyed a solid sophomore year, but is out to a roaring start in her third season in the Blue & Gold. Dems began the season on March 2 with a shutout win over New England College, allowing five hits in seven innings, striking out nine.

For an encore a day later, Dems did even better. The Mentor native tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts against Houghton University on March 3, allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk for a second straight shutout, the first time achieving that feat.

In her third outing of the season, Dems allowed her first earned run, but still got the win over Baruch, pitching five strong innings. In the Florida finale, Dems took the loss to Anna Maria. But still, her overall stats are quite impressive.

Dems returned home to Cleveland with 24 strikeouts in 23 ⅔ innings and an impressive 1.77 ERA, plus a .198 opposing batting average.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action at Bracken Field against Oswego State on Wednesday, March 18 with the first pitch at 1 pm.
