John Carroll (1-0) kicked off the tournament with a 3-1 victory over SUNY Geneseo (0-1) on Friday afternoon.
Nicole Pilewski and
Julianne McGervey each tallied 11 kills in the opener. Pilewski added 19 digs.
Katie Cosker led all players with 20 digs in the contest.
Geneseo took the first set in a close 25-21 decision. John Carroll then rallied, taking the second and third sets comfortably. The Blue Streaks took an 8-3 lead to jump out early, and held a 16-9 advantage late. Geneseo closed the gap to 18-13, but two kills by
Alexa Webber and a service ace by
Caitlin Cianciolo iced the game at 25-21.
Bethany 3, John Carroll 2 (25-17, 25-18, 25-27, 19-25, 12-15)
The Blue Streaks (1-1) had an early two-set lead, but the Bethany Bison (1-1) marched back to take the nightcap in five sets.
McGervey led all Blue Streaks with 12 kills, with Pilewski again notching 11. Webber also added nine kills. Cosker added five aces in the match.
Kit O'Shaughnessy led the team with six blocks and 13 assists, and was third with 13 digs. Cosker was the leader in digs, with 29.
JCU led the third set, 24-23, but a 4-1 run from the Bison started the comeback. The Blue Streaks could not muster one of their own in the fourth. Bethany erased an 11-6 deficit in the fifth to take the match.
