Women's Basketball Gets Off the Schneid with a Road Win over Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- On a winter Saturday afternoon, the Muskingum Fighting Muskies hosted the John Carroll Women's Basketball team.

The Blue Streaks entered on the heels of a 4-game losing skid, dropping them to 3-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference play at the halfway mark of the league schedule.

John Carroll bounced back in a big way, gritting out a 72-61 overtime win at the Anne Steele Center.

John Caroll got out to a fast start, as Kaelyn Underwood won the tip and scored the first basket of the afternoon. John Carroll was the first team to score 10 points, which they can credit their fast start to their incredible 3-point shooting. Nine of their first 14 points came from 3-point range. Back-to-back Muskingum layups left the quarter tied 18-18.

The Muskies scored the first basket of the period, though Ava Ryncarz answered with a three. The second quarter saw a long defensive stretch with neither team scoring a basket for several minutes. Muskingum ended this cold spell with a 3-point shot with three minutes left in the period, setting Muskingum ahead, 25-24.

John Carroll turned it up on defense, as the Blue Streaks went to a zone to get stops to end the quarter. The visitors held Muskingum scoreless for the last three minutes of the half. John Carroll clung to a 26-25 advantage at half.

John Carroll's started out the second half blazing with a 10-0 run, as Halle Landies got them started, scoring the first bucket of the half. It was immediately followed by a Carmen Heuker basket and Landies back-to-back threes. The run was ended, as Muskingum got up from the mat thanks to back-to-back baskets.

John Caroll controlled the next few minutes, as the Blue Streaks advanced to their largest lead of the day, 43-31, with 2:30 to go in the period. Muskingum tried to fight back with a 5-0 run of their own, but a Halle layup immediately ended that.

Morehead ended the quarter hitting a half court heave at the buzzer. A miracle make made the score 45-39 at the end of the quarter, with John Carroll leading going into the fourth.

Anna Lippiatt started the fourth quarter with her own 5-0 run, slimming the score 45-44 and prompting a John Caroll timeout. After a scoreless couple of minutes, Muskingum hit a three to give them a 47-45 lead, which was immediately answered with a Jaylen Hoffmann corner triple.

Kaelyn Underwood, who was relatively quiet to that point, hit a key mid-range jumper to make the score 50-47. This was followed by a John Carroll turnover and a Muskingum layup making the score 50-49.

At about the two minute mark, with JCU trailing 55-52, Hoffmann came up with a huge corner three, tying the game at 55. Hoffman then found a cutting Pietrowski for a layup giving John Carroll a 2-point lead. But a huge Muskingum tied the game at 57 at 39 seconds, and there the score remained at the end of regulation.

John Carroll dominated the overtime period from start to finish. Muskingum got the first bucket of the period as she blew by a defender for a layup, but then Ryncarz scored eight straight points to give John Carroll a 65-59 lead.

As time ticked on, JCU's lead increased to double digits with 1:07 to play, courtesy of two Hoffmann free throws.

Muskingum fought until the end, but Underwood put the game away with two free throws. John Carroll won the overtime period by a clear 15-4 margin.

Halle Landies had a game-high 20 points, while Underwood contributed with a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Ava Ryncarz also added 14 points, including her clutch overtime contributions.

With the win, John Carroll improves to 9-8 on the season. The next time they will be in action will be on Wednesday, January 25, as the Blue Streaks look ahead to an important OAC road matchup against Mount Union.
