Capital Clips Women's Basketball in Narrow OAC Showdown

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The first home game of 2024 proved to be a barnburner for John Carroll Women's Basketball.

The Blue Streaks battled a similarly strong Capital Comets team, as both entered with identical 8-4 records, both 3-2 in conference play.

A strong fourth-quarter effort by the visitors resulted in a a narrow 68-63 loss for JCU.

The Comets opened with a 4-0 run to begin, but John Carroll quickly countered, with Maddie Pietrowski hitting a triple near the midway mark to take the lead. With two minutes later, Bella Carcioppolo converted an and-one, with Halle Landies following it up with a pretty three-pointer. John Carroll continued to gallop down the stretch, with Pietrowski sinking a layup with just a second left to set the lead at 18-9 after one.

Just past the eight-minute mark, Ava Ryncarz sank a triple to get the crowd amped, though Capital slimmed the margin to four points by the midway point of the period. Despite another Ryncarz three-pointer, the Comets got the lead back near the two-minute mark, 31-30. A pair of Landies free throws and a last-second Pietrowski layup kept the deficit small, though, at 36-34.

The Comets raced out of the break, but the Blue Streaks proved to be quicker. Excellent efforts in the paint by Abigail Rosol and Carcioppolo plus a jumped by Ryncarz got John Carroll back on top, though the Comets controlled much of the momentum. That is, until Landies buried a trey near the one-minute mark to tie the contest at 50. Carcioppolo kept things tied, at 52 apiece, entering the fourth with a late layup.

The visitors burst to a strong start in the fourth quarter, firing up a 6-1 run in the opening three minutes before the Blue Streaks called a timeout. John Carroll clawed back to take the lead thanks to a couple Ryncarz free throws and an excellent Rosol layup in traffic, leading to a Capital timeout near the halfway point of the fourth.

The final five minutes proved to be thrilling, with the teams trading jabs. A mini Capital run, of the 4-0 variety, led to a JCU timeout with exactly a minute to play. But a JCU miss and a pair of Capital free throws placed JCU in treacherous straights, down 67-63, with 18 seconds left. John Carroll was unable to fight out of the deficit, losing just the team's second home game of the season.

Ava Ryncarz led the effort with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Halle Landies tallied 13 points, with Maddie Pietrowski close behind at 12 points, along with 6 assists.

John Carroll will be back in action on Wednesday, heading to face rival Mount Union in a 7 pm tip-off in Alliance.
