Women's Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale at Capital

BEXLEY — Following a hot start in the regular-season finale, John Carroll Women's Basketball cooled off in a road defeat.

The Capital Comets warmed up in the second half of the Saturday matinee, dealing the Blue Streaks a 76-66 loss.

Despite the defeat, John Carroll remains in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with an 8-10 mark. The Blue Streaks will be the #5 seed, and will head Ohio Northern on Tuesday in the OAC Quarterfinal at a time to be announced by the host.

The opening half of the first quarter was all Blue Streaks. John Carroll roared to a 9-0 advantage, punctuated by an Ava Ryncarz 3-pointer. Capital tried to slim the deficit down the stretch, but free throws by Bella Carcioppolo and Angela Vitantonio kept the margin at nine, 18-9, after the first quarter.

But the Capital found a rhythm in the second quarter, firing up a 12-3 lead in the first five minutes to take the hosts' first lead of the day. A Katie Zatta triple at the 1:50 mark stole the lead back for JCU at 29-27, and another one with 22 seconds left ensured JCU stood ahead at half, 33-29.

Ryncarz and Carmen Heuker helped to extend the lead to eight at a couple points but near the midway mark of the third stanza, Capital chipped away. The Comets briefly took the lead back on a couple of occasions only for JCU to answer. But after Carcioppolo's jumper to tie it at 46 with 2:35 left in the third, Capital raced to an 8-2 run to carry a six-point lead into the fourth.

John Carroll slimmed the deficit to four early in the fourth, but the Comets did not relent late, keeping things just out of reach of the visitors.

Maddie Pietrowski led the Blue Streaks with 16 points, adding an impressive 6 blocks and 6 rebounds. Ava Ryncarz also enjoyed an impressive statline, with 13 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double, her fourth in five games. Zatta chipped in nine, her second highest total of the campaign.

With the loss, John Carroll drops to 13-12 on the year overall heading into postseason play.
