Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Series

Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Series

The Cuyahoga Gold Bowl series dates back to 1989, when former Baldwin Wallace College Alumni Director Ted Theodore decided to create a trophy that would go to the winner of the annual John Carroll vs. Baldwin Wallace football game. Although the series between the two Cleveland area colleges dated back to 1921, the game had been played sporadically over the years.

When John Carroll was accepted to join the Ohio Athletic Conference in time for the 1989-1990 academic year, the football rivalry was guaranteed to become an annual event.

The trophy that the two teams compete for is a plaque with a rock shaped like a football and displays the flags of each school and a medallion that indicates the winner each year. The trophy is held until the two teams meet the following football season.

Since the inception of the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl series in 1989, Baldwin Wallace has won 13 times and John Carroll has captured 22 victories. There have been two overtime games (1997 and 2007), and 18 of the previous 26 meetings have been decided by ten points or less.
