Gross captured the NCAA Division III championship in 1981 at 134 pounds. He graduated as having wrestled more matches (114) than any other Blue Streak.
He was one of only four wrestlers in history to have won more than 20 matches in three consecutive seasons. As a Senior tri-captain on the 1981 team which finished fourth in the Division III nationals. He was a Four-year starter with a career record of 77-36-1
