Jack (Buck) Byrne was an integral piece of the Blue Streak offensive and defensive lines during the early 1950s. In 1953, the team captain Byrne helped lead John Carroll to a 7-2-0 record.  In a game against Dayton that season, he was injured during the third quarter but still managed to play and was key in protecting the offense to help the Blue Streaks to a 19-13 victory.

Byrne became the first John Carroll player to be named to the All-Catholic All-American team.  He was also named Second Team All-Ohio during his career.

Byrne was selected in the 14th round of the 1955 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 1995, Byrne was named to the "Transition Era" team (1946-1970) as part of the 75th anniversary of JCU football.
