Hall of Fame
Just the third team to be inducted into the John Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame, the 1993 Volleyball team is the first from a women’s sport to be honored.
Following a successful 1992 campaign in which the Blue Streaks racked up an impressive 33-3 mark yet still did not draw the interest of the NCAA tournament committee, the 1993 season provided another opportunity with a majority of the players returning. Under the direction of head coach Gretchen Weitbrecht and assistant coach Jerry Schweickert, the 1993 team finished the conference regular season undefeated and rolled to the program’s first OAC Tournament title.
An NCAA Championship bid this time would be a formality, and the Blue Streaks would make it a memorable occasion. When JCU defeated Guilford College in the first round of the 1993 tournament, it marked the first NCAA Tournament victory by any program in school history.
Although eventual national champion Juniata would end the Blue Streaks’ tournament run in the round of 16, their 34 wins set the school record for most victories in a season. The 1993 team was a part of a two-year run in which John Carroll won 67 out of a possible 74 matches.
