John C. Wasmer Sr. was a major benefactor to John Carroll throughout his lifetime.
Wasmer founded Lake Erie Screw Corporation in 1946, building a successful family business with the helps of his sons, John C. Wasmer, Jr. ’45 and George F. Wasmer ’58, along with sons-in-law Bill Rawlings and Jim Dorenkott.
On October 5, 1968, John Carroll dedicated Wasmer Field for his contributions to the University. This became the first home on campus for Blue Streak football and the team celebrated with a 29-7 defeat of Case Tech in the inaugural game.
Wasmer and his wife, Florence, remained major philanthropic contributors in the Cleveland area and in Florida where they moved in the 1980s.
John Carroll granted Wasmer a honoris causa doctorate at commencement in 1982.Â
Wasmer passed away in 1985 at the age of 88.
