Bushi received the J.D. Connors Memorial Award winner as the Most Outstanding Freshman of the 1964 football team. He started and lettered all three years on varsity at linebacker for the Blue Streaks. Bushi also garnered the Bill Belanich Award as JCU's Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman in 1967.

Bushi was named first team All-PAC in his senior season, while also earning a berth on the small college All-American team as an honorable mention as a senior. He signed a free agent contract with Cleveland Browns and started an exhibition game for the Browns against Pittsburgh at Municipal Stadium in August of 1968.
