Schweickert started as a football player when he began attending John Carroll. He was a three time first team All-PAC performer at the quarterback and running back postions throughout the 1956-1959 seasons. In his final season, Schweickert lead the Blue Streaks to their first undefeated season in program history in 1959, posting a 7-0-0 record. That year, Schweickert was named to the All-Catholic and All-American teams.

Along with being an integral part of the Blue Streak team on the offensive side of the ball, Schweickert also excelled as a punter, punt returner, and safety. Regarded by many to be the one of the best all-purpose players during the Transition Era.

After his graduation, Schweickert took over as assistant coach of the football program under John Ray. After leaving the university for a year, he would later return in 1963 as an assistant coach until he took over as head coach in 1965. He would continue as head coach until 1976. His coaching record during those 12 seasons was 56-41-4, winning four conference championships in that timeframe.

Schweickert also founded the JCU baseball program and became head coach in 1973. He would remain coach of the program until 1995. From 1981 to 1986, Schweickert held the position of Athletic Director. The current JCU baseball field has been named after him in honor of his illustrious career.
