Insana was a four-year letterwinner at quarterback for John Carroll who guided the Blue Streaks to a 23-7 record in his three seasons as a starter throughout the 1991-1994 seasons. During his illustrious career at John Carroll, Insana broke several school records:

Although these records do not stand today, Insana put the Blue Streak football program on the map as a serious contender on the national level throughout his career.

Insana led John Carroll to a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference championship that year, and was named First-Team All-OAC. He also received the Mike Gregory Award in his senior year as the Most Outstanding Offensive Back in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
