Mark F. Hawald was a talented wrestler known for being a four-time national qualifier. He was only the fifth wrestler in OAC history at the time to win four individual league titles.
The OAC opposition was no match for Hawald as he concluded his career with a 35-2 record against conference opponents. This dominance was a key part of the team's four consecutive OAC Championships from 2002-2005.
Hawald has a deep list of accolades including the 2001 Outstanding Freshman Wrestler, 2002 Most Improved Wrestler, 2003 Outstanding Wrestler, 2004 Most Valuable Wrestler and 2005 Most Valuable Wrestler.
Hawald, a 2004 Division III All-American (3rd place at 177 pounds), currently holds the record for most matches wrestled in JCU history with 153, and shares the record for most victories (122) with Joe Schmidt.
