He was a three-year starter and a two-time First Team All-President’s Athletic Conference choice at Guard.

During his time at John Carroll, the Blue Streaks were 21-6-2 and won two conference championships. Following his senior season, Layton received an invitation to play in the 1974 All-Ohio Shrine Bowl. Later on, he earned a spot on the "Modern Era All-Time Team" as an Offensive Lineman.
