Was the varsity quarterback on the football team from 1961-1963, where he led the team to a 15-0 mark during his senior year. Â He received a variety of awards, including All-PAC, Cleveland Touchdown Club Local Player of the year, and Second team All-Catholic.
The most impressive part of Gus McPhie's career was how he got there. During his junior year, he was an alternate with Mirguet behind O'Malley for the number one spot. During his last two seasons, he was able to grab the number one spot and lead his team to an undefeated season due to his excellent passing ability. He was the conference passing leader during the 15-0 mark and was turned to, to make big plays in close games. He was able to help the Blue Streaks achieve multiple come from behind victories.
