Chad Stein began his career at John Carroll as part of national qualifying basketball teams, and ended his time as a national qualifying individual in track & field. He was a two-time All-American in the discus (2000 and 2001), where his highest finish was third in the nation as a junior.

Over the course of his career, Stein was a three-time All-Ohio champion in the discus (1998, 2000 and 2001) and was the All-Ohio runner-up in 1999. He was a perfect four-for-four in that he won the Ohio Athletic Conference champion in the discus each of his four years. Stein graduated as the school record holder in the discus and hammer throw, and was the discus champion in 21 different meets over the course of his career. He helped JCU finish 2nd in the OAC and 13th in the nation as a senior, both of which were the highest marks achieved by a JCU track & field team at the time)

Stein also lettered two times for the JCU men's basketball team, helping the Blue Streaks reach the NCAA Division III “Elite Eight” in both 1998 and 1999.
