Eugene Stringer was one of the greatest athletes in the early days of John Carroll sports.

He was a fullback on the football team, a guard and captain of the basketball squad, catcher on the baseball team, and ran distance events in track.  However, his greatest achievements came on the gridiron.

As a four year starter from 1921-1924, Stringer scored 32 touchdowns in his career including 11 in 1922.  His career touchdown total was the most in the pre-war era.

Stringer played in first ever East-West collegiate All-Star game (now known as the East-West Shrine Bowl) in 1925.

Upon graduation, Stringer became the first Blue Streak to ever play professional football as he played one season for the Cleveland Bulldogs of the National Football League in 1925.

Afterwards, he headed the football and basketball programs at St. Francis University in Loretto, PA from 1926-1932 and then taught junior high in Cleveland.

Stringer became a charter member of the JCU Athletic Hall of Fame on December 9th, 1964 and passed away in 1985 at the age of 82.

In 1995, Stringer was named to the "Pre-War Era" team (1920-1942) as part of the 75th anniversary of JCU football.
