After spending his first two years at Gannon College, John Ambrosic transferred to John Carroll and made an immediate impact.

During the 1972-73 season, his first in a Blue Streak uniform, he received the most votes out of any player on the All-Presidents Athletic Conference team while winning the PAC Player of the Year award.  That year, Ambrosic also led the league in scoring and set conference records for field goals (214) and points (22.6 ppg) in a single season.

His 22.6 points per game still ranks in the top ten in JCU history for a single season.

Ambrosic also played baseball as he batted .375 and shared league leads in runs and hits in 1973, which was John Carroll's first season as an intercollegiate varsity baseball team.

After graduating with a business law degree in 1974, he came back and coached the JCU women's basketball team during the 1975-76 season.  In his one season as head coach, Ambrosic guided the Blue Streaks to an 11-5 record, their first winning record in the team's short existence.  He then took a teaching and coaching job at Riverside High School the following year.

The man known as "Johnny Angel" was posthumously enshrined into the JCU Athletic Hall of Fame after passing away in 1981 at the age of 29 from a recurring illness.
