Walker was a three-time national qualifier and two-time All-American at 177 pounds. He finished second in the nation in 1986 and ranked fourth in the nation as a sophomore.

As a three-time Presidents' Athletic Conference champion, he helped the Blue Streaks win PAC titles all three years. He was awarded Most Valuable Wrestler as a junior and senior, and Coaches Award winner as a senior.

His record of 80-15 puts him in a tie for fifth place in highest career winning percentage (.842) and a tie for 14th place all-time in career victories. Sam led the team in winning percentage as both a junior and senior, both times above 87 percent.

He won six regular season tournament championships and was named Most Valuable Wrestler at the Collegiate Tournament his senior year.
